Weight Management Programme

Overweight and obesity are linked to numerous chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, many forms of cancer and musculoskeletal problems (e.g. osteoarthritis). Weight management is thus very important. The weight management program is a supervised and personalised programme that combines exercise and education for individuals who are overweight or obese. Weight maintenance and reduction should be accomplished with a healthy balance of regular exercise and caloric intake. Our physiotherapists help you in taking concrete steps towards a more desirable body weight and a healthier lifestyle.  In our center, we also make use of unweighting technology (i.e. Altergravity treadmill) in assisting you to workout with lesser stress and pain on your joints.



Resting metabolic rate assessment is also available to accurately evaluate individual’s daily caloric needs. Appropriate calories balance can further enhance weight management goals.

Individuals who are overweight or obese can join our programme:
OverweightBMI ≥25 kg/m2

Waist girth > 102 cm (men)
Waist girth > 88 cm (women)

Recommendation on Weight Management by the American College of Sports Medicine (2014)
  • The primary mode of exercise should be aerobic training; resistance and flexibility exercise should be incorporated.
  • Exercise 5 -7 days/ week for 30 – 60 min/day with moderate intensity
  • Total duration of exercise should be > 150 min/ week
  • Progress exercise duration to >250 min/week to enhance long term weight loss maintenance

Goals on Weight Management
  • The goal for weight management is to maintain a BMI of 18.5-24.9 kg/m2 with a waist circumference <102cm for men and <88cm for women.
  • Target a minimal reduction in body weight of at least 5% - 10% of initial body weight over 3 – 6 months.
